Eyeball Kicks

One day we decided to give up our real jobs and fill a room with our favourite things, thus
Eyeball Kicks was born.

We think the name says it all about the kind of artwork we stock but when pressed, we call it lowbrow art or pop surrealism and whilst this genre originates largely from the USA, it made it's way to New Zealand shores in the early nineties (though arguably it was already here in the form of punk rock album art and 'alternative' 'zines). We believe the first gallery in New Zealand to offer an alternative to the classic flower-filled vase was Space Your Face during the nineties (the brainchild of the late great Martin F Emond and Illicit owner Steve Hodgeson). There was also Mondo Pop, ex-Australia, which operated in Auckland for a couple of years early 2000.

Eyeball Kicks opened 1st October 2005 and seven years on we're still peddling a mix of limited edition, fine art prints, books, magazines, stickers, patches and collectables as well as in-house custom picture-framing and print publishing.

We think of "lowbrow" as being punkrock of the art world; punchy, questioning and non-conformist but Mark Ryden sums it up best in Hi Fructose Vol.15 when he says "I think the ability to ride the line of irony, questioning something whilst appreciating it, has a lot to do with what "lowbrow" is about in general".
