Seymour

Peter Kelk is an NZ artist currently based in Berlin, under the creative pseudonym 'Seymour'.

Drawing on walls from an early age and receiving no disciplinary side effects to speak of inspired an ongoing trail of pastel scribbles that later would develop into his primary passion, illustration.

Formalisng the idea that he wanted to draw for a living, he studied graphic design for three years, and spent another year honing his skills working in Vienna, Austria, as a designer. Peter's most recent achievement was 'My name is Seymour', a very successful solo exhibition held at Pop Up gallery in Wellington. He focused his vast and varied talents incorporating print, installation, toys and product to create a sell-out show which raised his profile as a New Zealand based pop surrealist, and gained national media attention.

'My name is Seymour' explores an alternate reality in which his characters adhere to their own distinct rules of conduct, social heirarchy and boundaries. Each individual piece contributes insight, revealing a fragment of the overall world in which they live.

Seymour's other great passion, which goes hand and hand with his obsessive tendency to hoard vinyl, his inseparable relationship with his guitar, is his band poster and album cover commissions. Easily recognisable stylistically as Seymour's, these pieces rarely linger thematically, instead revealing flickers of inspiration sourced from surroundings, music and the time.
